Kiawentiio Tarbell Bio

Kiawentiio Tarbell is a Canadian actress and singer-songwriter. She was born into a Mohawk family in Akwesasne. She made her television debut in the third season of Anne with an E in 2019 and her film debut in Beans in 2020. Tarbell was born into a Mohawk family in Akwesasne, a national reserve that is located on both sides of the Canada–United States border. Her first name means “nice morning” in Kanienʼkéha.  She grew up in a house on Kawehno:ke. Tarbell attended Akwesasne Freedom School and Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School.

Kiawentiio Tarbell Career

Tardell’s first career milestone was when she was cast for the CBC series Anne with an E in 2019. This was her first television debut. She joined the show on its third season.  For this role, she had to learn to speak the Miꞌkmaq language and obtain an understanding of their tribe, history, and culture. She appeared in her first film Beans in 2020  as a 12-year-old Mohawk girl living in Kahnawake. She won the 2019 Vancouver Film Critics Circle award for the One to Watch for her performance in Beans.

Kiawentiio played a recurring character Maya Thomas on the Peacock sitcom Rutherford Falls. She voiced Wahta in What If. Tarbell also has released an EP, In My Head you can stream on any platform of your choice. She was also selected in 2021 to portray Katara in the Netflix live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender series.
